Pain in the Ass (Literally)

Did my first Gonal-f around 6 tonight, the pen is so much bigger than the I remember especially since using the tiny Lupron syringes.  And then P and I went out to eat.

We just got home and as I was organizing my meds for this next week I decided to take a peek at the HCG trigger shot and in bold letters on one of the bottles it says: FOR INTRAMUSCULAR USE ONLY

Not only do I have to mix the trigger shot, which I have no idea how to do, but I have to get it in the ass???

OH NO!!  Luckily, I have at least a week to worry about it.

It is absolutely impossible to ever be prepared for any of this!

  1. Check with your RE. My Pregnyl said that too and I freaked but it turns out they just wanted me to inject sub-q. So you mix and draw the shot with the long IM needle, then switch to a sub-q needle to inject. But check with your clinic! It sounds like we have almost the exact same protocol.

  2. Yeah, check with your RE. I did the hcg subcutaneously too. I think that's pretty standard, despite what the packaging says. I got freaked out because they sent the big needles with it the first time I did it for an IUI and had to have the nurse at the clinic give me the correct size syringe and needles.

  3. Look on YouTube to see about mixing the meds. I've never done hcg intramuscularly, but I would be good to ask in order to find out. Good luck, the shots get so much easier with time.

    1. You're right, unfortunately the shots do get easier, doesn't make it any more fair though haha!!!! Youtube is a great idea, thanks

  4. Oh man, no fun at all. I have only taken sub q too...you will get it figured out I am sure!

  5. my trigger shots have all been sub-q too. If it turns out to that you do need to do it IM, you can always give it to yourself in the thigh too... it'll still be sore, but better than trying to look in the mirror to give yourself a shot.

I've never had to mix a trigger shot...does it just say "mix" or do you have to reconstitute it? If it's just mix, all you have to do is roll it in between your hands a couple times... that will also help so it's not so cold when you give it :)

  6. Yeah I actually have to mix I have powder in one bottle and liquid in the other...sounds like its pretty common though so I don't think it will be hard to figure out!

    1. No, that's pretty easy.... I can explain if you need help (but I don't want to be one of those annoying people that gives advice that isn't needed :)

Good Luck! And thanks for the updates :) Its nice knowing that there are other people experiencing the same emotions.

  7. I had to mix two medicines when I did my egg retrieval. (one was a powder and one was just liquid) We watched you tube videos a few times to figure it out! and the first time I think it took us 30 minutes but by the end it was less than 5. Not like you ever get "used" to it though!

  8. The teeny Lucrin (your Lupron) needles are easy. I always found Puregon (Follistim) easier. I'm sorry your trigger is intramuscular. I'm lucky; my trigger (Ovidrel) is a tummy shot!

  9. I took my trigger right in my tummy area where I'd been taking the rest of them. You can do this! Trigger was easy and exciting!!!!

  10. I was FREAKED out about the Hcg trigger IM, but it actually hurt less than my SQ shots did. I wasn't less freaked out the next month, but I was pleasantly surprised every time.

  11. My Trigger shot was in the butt and it's nerve wracking to do but not as hard as it seems. I did 14 weeks of IM progesterone shots and after a while it's no biggie.
Just ask your RE and if it is IM, then they can show you how to administer it. It's a very important shot, so you want to make sure you do it correctly. They might even be able to do it for you depending on when they want you to take the shot.

There is always a first in this IVF road.

  12. It sounds like other bloggers have calmed you down already. I'm glad! I didn't have to do any IM shots, but mixing was no big deal. You'll be fine. You ARE doing this! :)

  13. The Walgreens specialty pharmacy website (and I'm sure several others) have great videos on how to prepare and administer all kinds of stuff. My trigger was IM and my mom was the only one around that evening so she watched the video a few times and I honestly didn't even feel a thing. You will do great no matter what!
